Crash Reports

Online:

A copy of a crash report can be purchased 24 hours a day online at www.buycrash.com. Buycrash.com is a revolutionary approach to making collision reports available to the public. This website is a statewide database, and reports can be immediately viewed, downloaded, and printed. The cost is $12.00 payable by credit card.

In-Person:

A copy of a crash report can be purchased Monday through Friday between the house of 8:00 am and 4:30 pm at the administrative office of the Sheriff’s Office. The cost is $8.00 payable by cash or money order.

By Mail:

A copy of a crash report can be purchased by mail by sending the following in a request:

• The name of the driver or parties involved, date of the accident, and location of the crash.

• A self-addressed stamped envelope.

• A business check or money order for $8.00, payable to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office.

Incident Reports

It is the policy of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office to provide any and all public information permitted under I.C. 5-14-3-5. In order to effectively serve you, we ask that you request incident reports in writing, on a form the Sheriff’s Office provides. Our office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. If you are not in the local area, please call the business office at (260) 668-1000 ext 5005 to obtain a copy of the request form.

The cost for an incident report is $0.10 per page.

*Juvenile records are not considered public records and cannot be released without proof of parenthood or guardianship.

Background Checks

If you need to obtain a background check, the Sheriff’s Office performs a check that searches Steuben County records. If you need a background check that is more in-depth you will need to contact the Indiana State Police or the FBI, depending on what process you are applying for.

Visit the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm to fill out a background check form. A valid photo ID is required.

Background checks cannot be done on another individual without a signed release and copy of the person’s photo ID.

You may also search mycase.in.gov for family, civil, criminal, and appellate court records that are not confidential. Some documents in some cases may be available, but if you aren't able to access a document on mycase.in.gov, it simply isn't available online. In that instance, contact the clerk's office in the county where the case is heard. Note that mycase.in.gov does not include records for all courts in Indiana, and how far back the records go varies by county.
